70/30 | Save or Splurge on Cleansers?

    Hi Everyone!

I did another Instagram poll asking if my followers saved or splurged on cleansers. This is referring to everyday cleansers (not makeup removing cleansers, balms, oils, etc.)

70% said they SAVE on cleansers

    My daily cleansing routine:

    • AM: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser – I like using the Cetaphil in the morning because it’s very gentle and doesn’t make my face feel dry.
    • PM: Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Clean Foaming Face Wash – I double cleanse with my makeup remover and then follow up with the Kiehl’s face wash.

Once I’ve finished my Kiehl’s cleanser, I probably won’t repurchase even though I really like it. I bought it on sale and I also bought the giant size which has lasted me a really long time. I’m still only halfway through after about 8-9 months of daily use.

I’ve tried cleansers like the Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser, Youth to the People Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser, Philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser, Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel. All of them were okay, but none of them are worth the price tag for me.

Last year, I splurged on a few different cleansers to test them out. I think I agree with the 70% to save on everyday cleansers. I’ve tried a variety of cleansers at different price points. There are a handful of higher ends ones that I didn’t mind, but I’d rather spend the money on makeup or moisturizers/serums.

What do you think? Save or splurge on cleansers?

  • Beauty Products | Save or Splurge?

    Hi Everyone!

If you’ve been reading my recent posts, you’ll know I’ve been doing inventory of my beauty products. Check out the recent posts below!

    Primers & Foundations | Bronzers | Blushes | Mascaras | Highlighters

    Makeup Goals: A Streamlined Collection

I’ve decided to compile a list of what beauty products I personally plan to SAVE or SPLURGE on. I’ll also have some products where I’ll be IN BETWEEN– which means I’ll either buy a mix of both high-end and drugstore or I’ll buy products that aren’t super expensive, but not super cheap either.

    Skincare- IN BETWEEN

I was reading articles on which beauty products to save and splurge on and a few said to save on skincare. I think I will mostly save because there are some great products found at the drugstore. If I want some luxe items, I can always get samples from Sephora and Nordstrom without breaking the bank. I do love the Sonia Roselli Water Balm though (read my review), so I will continue to splurge on that because it’s a multi-use product.

    Primers- SPLURGE

You need a good base for your makeup and that starts with primer.

    Foundations- SPLURGE

More expensive foundations just look and smell better than drugstore ones (for the most part).

    Concealers/Colour Correctors- IN BETWEEN

I think splurge on a good spot concealer I can wear without foundation. There are some good under eye concealers from the drugstore.

    Setting/Finishing Sprays/Powders & Face Mists- IN BETWEEN

I think a mix of both is okay.

    Makeup Brushes- SPLURGE

When I first started getting into makeup, I didn’t want to spend a lot on brushes, so I bought some on Amazon. They’re very soft and performed pretty well, but once I bought better quality ones, I could see the difference in my makeup application.

    Makeup Sponges- SAVE

I think it’s kind of crazy to buy a $20 sponge. I have never bought a beauty blender, so I don’t know if it performs better than a cheaper sponge, but I feel like they’re all quite similar; some may be denser than others, but they all blend the same, don’t they?

    Bronzers- SAVE

I love the Physician’s Formula one and it blends even better than the high end ones I’ve tried.

    Blushes- IN BETWEEN

I think I might splurge on a good, matte blush I can use every day because blushes last so long. I love the Milani ones that have shimmer and I really want to try a Physician’s Formula one.

    Highlighters- IN BETWEEN

Similar to blushes, I might splurge on 1 high end highlighter and then the rest of the collection will be drugstore brands. For the ones I own, the drugstore ones look prettier than my higher end ones (without having to wet them).

    Brows- IN BETWEEN

I’m kind of torn because I like the NYX Micro Brow pencil, but that pencil lasted so long that maybe it’s worth it to splurge on a brow pencil. I will definitely splurge on brow gel though and get the Benefit Gimme Brow.

    Eyeshadows- SPLURGE

I’ve noticed a difference in how my eyeshadow looks when using higher end ones especially with the fallout. I think I will invest in a few high end palettes- that have a good selection of neutral mattes and shimmery shades.

    Eyeliners- IN BETWEEN

Similar to blushes, eyeliner lasts me a long time (I prefer pencil liners), so maybe I should splurge.

    Mascara- SAVE

As much as I love some of the high-end deluxe samples of mascaras, there are so many drugstore ones I love that are a fraction of the price. Especially when you should dispose of it after using for a few months, it’s not worth it to pay $30 (unless you only own 1 mascara, then maybe it’s worth it, but I like to have several).

Lipsticks, Liners and Glosses/Tints- IN BETWEEN

I think I’ll get 1 or 2 for each of the 3 types (lipstick, liner, gloss/tint), but save on the rest.

    Makeup Removers- IN BETWEEN

I like Simple makeup wipes and Garnier Micellar Water, but I really like Clinique’s Cleansing Balm. So, a mix of both.

    Perfumes- SPLURGE

When I was in high school, I used to use body sprays from Victoria’s Secret, but no more of that. I have two signature scents at the moment (1 for spring/summer, 1 for fall/winter) and I also have one that’s a bit more spicy that I don’t wear daily.

    Nail Polish- IN BETWEEN

I think I’ll find a good, wine red and a neutral to splurge on, but buy brands like OPI and Essie for the rest of my collection.

What products do you splurge on?

  • Review | CHI 1 Inch Tourmaline Ceramic Hair Straightener

    Hi Everyone!

media-20180126wewr.jpgI just splurged and bought a Chi hair straightener from The Bay, I got the hot pink 1 inch Tourmaline Ceramic hair straightener. I don’t love hot pink, but it was a better price than the Chi Air from Shoppers, which is about $119. From the picture on The Bay’s website, it looks like there is a display and buttons on the side, but it does not have either and I also did not receive the Silk Keratin Infusion like it said, but oh well. It looks like the Chi Original, the on/off button is on the inside and has an LED light. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a lock, but that’s okay because I can just put something around it for when I store it. I just quickly tested it out and OMG, it goes through my hair so smoothly…something that my Toni and Guy straightener does not do. The Toni and Guy one straightens smoothly but when I’m flipping the iron to curl my hair, it just doesn’t run as smoothly as the Chi. I was a little disappointed to find that it didn’t have a display or temperature controls…but I guess it’s what I get for the price I paid. The Chi straighteners with displays and temperature controls are more expensive than $99 CAD. I have no complaints so far- I’ve only used it for about five minutes to test out how well it curls and straightens my hair. I’ll keep you guys updated on any complaints/cons about the iron if they come up.

The Toni and Guy ionic hair straightener I have is from Shoppers. It has a display and you can adjust the temperature and the ion levels. I’m not really sure what adjusting the ionic levels does, and I never really cared to look it up, but there are three levels. The straightener can also be locked and has an LED display. What always drives me crazy for this straightener is the fact that the buttons are on the top and when I’m curling my hair, my hand is always adjusting the temperature and ion level as I spin the iron. This is one of the reasons I wanted to get a new one with controls on the side or the inside.

    RATING: 3/5

I give it a 3/5 because it doesn’t have a lock to keep it closed and you can’t adjust the temperature. But I like that it’s super smooth and my hair doesn’t get caught on the plates or edges. I would definitely purchase a different CHI straightener that has all the features I want: lock and buttons to adjust temperature.

Originally, I bought an Infiniti Premier Conair 1 inch wet to dry straightener. It was $49 at Shoppers, I tested it out, but didn’t like it. It has dial on the side to adjust the temperature which was a plus. The smell of the plates was terrible and the top plate had a dip in it that tugged at my hair. It straightened okay, but the smell was too much for me. So I will be returning this one…next time I know to splurge instead of save on hair straighteners.

What hair tools do you use?
